As the world prepares for the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers draw in Russia on Friday, there is no doubt that the South America region will hog the limelight.
Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Columbia and my native country Peru, are always primed for greater things among the 32 countries vying for the coveted title.
But with reigning champions Germany having shown Brazil flames at the previous World Cup at the famous Maracana Stadium with a 7-0 drubbing, no one cannot rule take them as clear favorites too.
Africa, which is represented by Senegal, improved Nigeria, Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia will want to reach at least the knockout stages.
Europe, which boast most countries going to the three-week tournament will also look at 2010 champions Spain, talented France and determined Portugal to follow Germany as one of the leading countries.
But all eyes will be on Neymar of Brazil and Lionel Messi of Argentina to carry South America through.
Uruguay have, under Luis Suarez , will also bite as they always rise to the occasion.
But my native Peru, who contest the world’s biggest spectacle for the first time in 36 years, should advance into the last eight at least.
The draw will surely have the group of death and surprises galore.
And as the clock tick, and the world await for the draw, I cannot wait to see which teams will be paired with Peru as the second and most exciting gear of the draw gets activated.
