MOTIVATION AND GUIDANCE FOR APAA PLAYERS IN THE GAUTENG ENGEN CHALLENGE U18 – 2025

This competition also served as a source of motivation for our players beyond the field, reminding them to continue growing not only in football but also in their social and everyday lives. The players had two opportunities to receive life skills training and guidance to support their personal development both now and in the future.

Prior to the competition, Augusto Jr.—son of Professor Augusto Palacios and director of APAA—spoke to the players ahead of their final training session on Thursday, 17 July. His message focused on valuing each player’s unique talent and the promising future that lies ahead—not just for them, but also for their families, who remain their strongest foundation.

Drawing from his personal experience as the son of a professional footballer who played across five continents, Augusto Jr. highlighted the importance of understanding where each person comes from and the sacrifices they must make to succeed.

During the tournament, we were honoured to have two Engen ambassadors: Coach Thabo Senong—FIFA Instructor and international coach—and former Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper, Brighton Mhlongo. Both share a long-standing relationship with Professor Palacios.

Brighton began his football journey at APAA, showcasing his talent as a goalkeeper before progressing to Orlando Pirates, Bafana Bafana, and SuperSport United. It is rewarding to see him thrive in his post-football career. His words deeply resonated with the players, as he spoke about the challenges, sacrifices, and discipline required to succeed at a competitive level, and how to maintain that same commitment when starting a family.

Coach Thabo Senong, who also began his coaching journey at APAA, shared his incredible path from Pimville, Soweto, to international coaching success. He worked with the Orlando Pirates Development team, coached South Africa’s U20 National Team, and now contributes globally through his role at FIFA. His message to the players emphasised that while winning is important, it’s not the final destination. Rather, it’s part of a bigger learning journey. He encouraged players to focus on growth, perseverance, and teamwork, reminding them that football is a journey made up of many stages.

I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Brighton and Thabo for their powerful and inspiring messages to our players and coaching staff. Opportunities like this are rare and deeply appreciated. Thank you also to Augusto Jr. for his continued guidance and dedication.

The preparation of our APAA players and technical team covered all aspects—both on and off the field. It was a truly valuable experience.

Congratulations to Coach Lesego and his technical team for their hard work, commitment, and expertise.

Please continue following APAA for more important updates across all levels.

Warm regards,

Prof. Augusto Palacios
