The Soweto derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs has come and gone but once again it failed to sparkle.
Not because of the empty stadium, because both sets of supporters came in their big numbers to claim the bragging rights. But because the players have really forgotten what the Derby is all about.
While Chiefs might have won the Carling Black Label and looked the better side, The Derby need a reawakening.
Good football, and minute-by-minute thriller, ball possession, individual brilliance, and great goals have always associated with the Soweto derby.
From; Doctor Khumalo, Pio Nugoira, Etienne Ntsunda, Sam Pam JR, Ace Ntsoelengoe, Jomo Sono, Bebedict Vilakazi, Thabo Mooki, Tinashe Nengomasha, Lucky Lekgwathi, Tebogo Moloi Jimmy Tau, Marks Maponyane To many great players but to mention a few, the Derby was the real deal
Not only did it separate both sets of fans but the country too for 90 minutes also.
All over the world the Derby is known for its pride and bragging rights. It is a match that bring the best in the players and coaches too. Even the Manchester derby between Manchester United and Manchester City or Real Madrid and Barcelona, these are special matches everyone look forward to watching.
But not our derby anymore. As it centers around boring soccer with players restricted to show off their skills.
And as for supporters, they are left frustrated and pondering when will the derby finally shine like in the past.
The likes of Jabu Pule and Steve Lekoelea are also the product the Soweto derby and one would expect youngsters being given the platform to shine at this stage and if we don’t use matches like the Carling Black Label to show the world what are players we have ready to be promoted, then surely we have lost the importance of the once mighty Soweto derby.
See your next week to share the beautiful game
